From the West - May 2025

The month of May is full of many events such as May Day, Cinco de Mayo, the Kentucky Derby, Mother’s Day, Victory in Europe (VE) Day, and culminating with Memorial Day, the unofficial beginning of Summer.

In the ancient Roman calendar, May was known as Maius. It was the third month in the original ten-month calendar and later became the fifth month after a calendar reform. The month's name, Maius, is believed to be derived from the Greek
goddess Maia, associated with the Roman goddess Bona Dea (fertility).

Around 713 BCE, King Numa Pompilius added January and February, making the year 12 months long. However, the year still began in March, keeping May as the third month. In 153 BCE, the civil year was officially shifted from March to January, making May the fifth month.

Key events in May's Masonic history:

• May 1st, 1786: The Grand Constitution of the 33d degree, the Scottish Rite, S.J. Supreme Council of Sovereign Grand Inspectors General, was ratified by the King of Prussia.

• May 1733: A charter was granted to Boston Freemasons, establishing the first duly constituted lodge in America. Go Sox!

As busy as we MAY be, we still need to focus on our Masonic obligations. If you feel you could contribute your expertise on any committee, please let us know...we can always use your help.

Our Quarterly Road Clean-up is schedule Saturday, June 21st. We all meet at Perkins Restaurant (905 Bichara Blvd. in Lady Lake) at 0745 for breakfast and we are usually finished by 1000.

Once again, it takes the entire Lodge Team to be successful, so please don’t hesitate to provide any input to make OUR Lodge better.

Fraternally,
