The Trestle Board
Villages Masonic Lodge No. 394 F. & A. M.
2401 Virginia Drive Leesburg, Florida
Meets the second Monday of every month – 12:30 Lunch, 1:30 Meeting
October 2026
FROM THE EDITOR
PLEASE NOTE that we have been notified that we are in copyright violation to use the name for our Lodge which is on our after-the-fire, re-issued Charter. Therefore, we will go back to, and use from hereon, our original name "Villages Masonic Lodge No. 394."
You may have noticed at the September Stated that WM Ferri began using that orignal name in his opening and closing of the Lodge, and that the correct pronunciation of our number is "three hundred ninety four."
From the East
My Brothers,
Summer is officially over and Fall is here. The name “October” comes from an old Roman word, octo, which means 8. That’s right – October was the eighth month of the year on the Roman 10-month calendar. It did not become the tenth month until the advent of the Gregorian calendar in A.D. 1582.
Many historical events happened in October: Columbus “discovered” the New World in 1492; Henry Ford’s Model T first went on sale in 1908; after 45 years of Cold War division, East and West Germany were reunited as the Federal Republic of Germany in 1990; on October 13, 1775, The United States Navy was born after the Second Continental Congress authorized the acquisition of a fleet of ships; and on October 13, 1792, the cornerstone of the White House was laid by our Masonic Brother George Washington.
As busy as we may be, we still need to focus on our Masonic obligations. We are currently in the process of working on our budget and committee assignments for 2027. We look forward to your input and support as we continue to plan and execute our Lodge programs. If you feel you could contribute your expertise on any committee, please let us know…we can always use your help, especially our newest Dual/Transfer Members.
District 15 will be hosting its annual 100 Master Mason Night on Thursday, October 29, 6:00 PM, at Peninsular Lodge. Many Grand Line and other District officers attend. If you have not attended one in the past, you should try to make this one. After the fantastic responses about last year’s dinner, the tradition will continue with a huge Prime Rib dinner, followed by a tyled meeting. All of this for only $35. Hope to see a lot of you there.
Mark your calendars for Saturday, 9 January 2027 for our open Installation at our Lodge. The plan right now is a light brunch at 11:00 AM with the Installation at High 12. The DDGM will be the Installing Officer, so I hope we have a great turn-out.
Once again, it takes the entire Lodge Team to be successful, so please don’t hesitate to provide any input to make OUR Lodge better. As always, if you would like to get in the Line, fill a chair in the future, or sit on a committee, please let us know.
Fraternally,
Bruce Ferri
Worshipful Master

From the West
October is the month that any of us who have experienced the Fall season north of the Mason–Dixon Line would characterize as the season of color. The days become shorter and the deciduous trees produce a grand variety of colors indicating the coming of winter and a renewal for the coming year.
With three months left in our Masonic year in our Lodge, it is important for us to consider the planning required for the coming year. Your officers will begin crafting a budget, a calendar of events and projects to ensure a successful 2027 for Villages Masonic Lodge No. 394.
As we bring these recommendations before the craft, we look for your input and feedback. We need active responses from all the members, not just a few, but all members. We will be looking for your opinions on what we are offering as a Lodge and what we can do better to serve both the members of this Lodge and Freemasonry as a whole.
We have a busy month with two Entered Apprentice Degrees to conduct, Our Stated meeting and, as usual, our Men’s Breakfast and Social Dinner. Please make every attempt to attend. Also brothers, if you need a ride to Lodge or to the social events please contact any one of your officers and we will get you there.
Once again, we are inviting all Master Masons of our Lodge to attend Ritual Practice which we hold every Thursday between 12 and 1:30 PM at the Lodge. All brothers are welcome no matter what your experience level may be, even if you just want to observe. We have a vast wealth of knowledge and experience in our membership, take a little time and contribute to our floor work and ritual.
Something from The Freemasons Community
“You should know yourself well, what you’re good at, where you struggle, what brings out your best. But also what brings out your worst. That kind of knowledge matters, because you can’t build yourself properly if you don’t understand the material.
Some men spend years fighting their nature or pretending
certain weaknesses aren’t there. Others lean too heavily on their strengths until those become weaknesses too. Self-knowledge gives you something better, a clearer way to move, you know when to trust yourself, when to slow down, when to ask for help and where you need discipline. The better you know the man in the mirror, the less likely you are to be surprised by him.”

From the South
With the help of some other Brothers, I added a couple things to the list of things we do as a Lodge.
Here's what we have so far: (again, not in any particular order):
M1) We have Social Dinners together
M2) We do the Breakfast Bunch thing on Fridays
M3) We have lunches before our meetings
M4) We have business meetings with Masonic Ed
M5) We give to multiple charities
M6) We go on occasional outings together
M7) We perform funerals when necessary
M8) We support other lodges, especially in degree work
M9) We support the District thru Masters and Wardens
So, I looked at the list. All good stuff for sure. But, on the 24th, I got to do the Senior Deacon lecture to a brand new candidate, and I had to say this to him from the Blue Book:
M"Freemasonry is a system of moral instruction..."
And I'm looking at the list above and I'm thinking, "Holy smoke. Is that what we're doing? What are we doing?"
For many, Masonry pretty much everywhere you go is a monthly business meeting along with a bit of fellowship beforehand. Nice, but is that it? That's what we pay dues and pay the bills to do? That's what being a Mason is?
I do the website and edit the Trestle Board. That's all good, John, but where is the "system of moral instruction"? ARE we making good men any better?
I'll be looking hard in the mirror sometime soon.
Our next Social Dinner will be on Monday, October 19th, at Japanese Steakhouse, 1004 Old Mill Run, Lake Sumter Landing, in The Villages. Social Hour begins at 4:30 PM, Dinner at 5:00.
Again, we want to make a good impression and our presence known in The Villages, so wear all the Masonic stuff you have, have a good time, talk to everybody you can in the place, and please tip generously. Let’s be visible doing outrageous good in our community!
Our First Fridays Breakfast Bunch will meet again on October 2nd, at 9:00 am, at the Bob Evans Restaurant, 2199 Parr Drive off CR 466. No agenda, no wives, just Brothers (or potential brothers) with Brothers.
Be sure to visit this website early and often so you don't miss a thing. We are constantly adding and updating times and events. You will always find up-to-date information with pertinent details on all our upcoming Lodge activities.
Yours in Brotherly affection,
John Markel

Whozat?
RH Richard Koenig, our Secretary
[Usually, the Editor will interview the Brother and then compose the article for this section. However, RH Koenig provided his own bio which we include here exactly as he wrote it. We could not have done better.]
I was born in Philadelphia on June 16, 1944, and was raised in an area known as Holmesburg in the northeast section of the city. I had a happy childhood, as things go.
I became a Boy Scout at age 11 and stayed active over the next 35 years. I became a member of Order of the Arrow (an honor society in Scouting) at age 13. I became an Eagle Scout at age 16.
After high school, I became an Associate Advisor in the Explorer Scouts and later on, its Advisor for the next three years. The relationships I developed then are still with me today. At the height of my years as Advisor we had over 60 Scouts, many I still hear from today.
I had envisioned joining the Army after high school but instead, enlisted in the Navy, following my older brother. I was fortunate enough to spend two tours in the Mediterranean during the Viet Nam War.
I stayed in the reserves after active duty at the Philadelphia Naval Yard on a destroyer escort until the yard closed.
After meeting my wife to be, I landed a job with the Budd Company (an automotive supplier in Philadelphia) as a millright for 30 years until the plant closed. I finshed my working career with ARC (a non-profit that helps adults with disabilities) in their maintenance department.
I've been married for 53 years and have two sons, a daughter, four grandkids and one puppy dog.
Upon retiring, we moved to The Villages in 2009. I became a Master Mason in March of 2016, Worshipful Master of Villages Masonic Lodge in 2020, in 2021 Worshipful Master of Memorial Lodge, and District Instructor in 2022 and 2023.
I wasn't thinking about becoming Secretary of the Lodge, but under the circumstances, I've been honored to serve as such.
I am also a Shriner and an active member of the York Rite, where I've had the privilege to serve in the East in all three York Rite bodies.
I've been blessed with good health for the time being, but it hasn't helped my golf game or made me a better pool player. I look forward to continuing my journey in Masonrry with the help and love of family, friends and my Masonic Brothers.

A word from Brother Rob

What the Square reveals
Sometimes the stone is straight. The joint is true. The work passes inspection. A man holds the Square against his conduct and finds that this week, this month, this particular area of his life is in good order.
Acknowledge that quietly. Not with a victory lap. With a brief recognition that the work is sound and the standard is holding.
Sometimes the stone is not straight. The Square reveals a gap, a lean, a deviation the man suspected but had not confirmed. That is not a crisis. It is a correction. The tool did its job. Now the man does his.
The Square is the most honest friend a man can have. It tells him the truth without malice, without agenda, without softening the report to protect his feelings. The man who welcomes that honesty has an advantage over every man who avoids it.
